Just curious,
When this appears under DNF "swapped crew" - what does it mean (is it like it says?) - and why would it be such a bad thing?

Go see the discussion on Specialstage.com under the Canada section.
Basically one crew swapped driver and co-driver. The other swapped co-drivers due to the sickness.

In the CARS rulebook, under Eligibility of Crew, p. B-1, it says:
1. A Rally crew shall consist of those two persons nominated on the official entry form as driver and co-driver.
4. During a performance rally, no change of crew and/or vehicle as listed on the official entry form for the event is permitted and, further, the crew member listed on the entry form as driver shall operate the vehicle at all times while on special stages. Switching of duties during stages shall result in exclusion from the event, and the entry shall be recorded on the results as a DNF.
