www.mlrc.ca/rallycross
ONLINE ENTRY: http://www.mlrc.ca/rallycross/register/
ENTRY LIST: http://www.mlrc.ca/rallycross/entrylist/

This series continues to provide an opportunity for future rally stars to get their feet wet. No special vehicle preparation is required - regular street cars are permitted. The low entry fees and minimal car prep mean that the Rallycross series will provide an affordable introduction to rallying for drivers of all budgets and skill levels.

DATES FOR 2012:

  • January 22nd

  • February 26th

  • July 8th

  • September 23rd

  • October 21st

With thanks to our sponsors:

New Sponsors: We welcome Can-Jam Motorsports as our title sponsors. We look forward a great partnership over the next few years. The guys from Can-Jam are longtime competitors and world class Subaru performance specialists!

New Website: Well, an updated one, what with a new sponsor I have had to update the website. With a whole new MLRC website coming soon there will be a new Rallycross site to come along with it.

New schedule: This might be difficult for some of you but I have had to move forward the start time of the day. This is for a few reasons. I really want to get the most out of the day and get as many runs in as possible. I also don't want to run to late into the day so we can get home in a reasonable time. I believe this will get a guaranteed 6 runs in in a day.

January Update - v1.1

Helmets:

I haven't been that strict on helmets in the past, but this year I will want to see all the helmets at the first event and, as they do at Ice Races, be adding a sticker to show that it has been checked.

If of course you don't come to the first event, I will check your helmet at the first event you attend or if you change helmets.

I assume that this will be ok with everyone.

Thank you
James

Today I checked out the Rallycross course in Bancroft. Conditions are excellent - there is about a 10 cm deep covering of snow over the course. Snowmobiles have been running on a lot of the course, resulting in it being well packed. It is very smooth - in the Fall we filled in the two big dips that were in the back section of the winter course. Cars with stock suspensions should have no problem.

Just returned from preparing the Rallycross course in Bancroft. Conditions are fantastic - loads of snow (about 20 cm). We spent about three hours with the loader and my truck grooming the course.

January Update - v3.0

Results:

Yes that's right people, the results are already done and posted:

http://www.mlrc.ca/rallycross/results/2012/RX_jan22_web.pdf

Thank you:

This goes out to all of you for getting up earlier and coming out, I didn't hear one complaint and I think that everyone sees that us just starting a little earlier gets more runs in and thus more fun all round! I have a feeling that we will get 7 runs in the summer!

I would like to get everyone there and registered by 0900 though, this then does give me time to sort out car numbers as assigning numbers to a car with 2 or 3 numbers is not as easy as it looks. We can then get going right at 0915 for the drivers meeting and start racing!

February:

I say this every month, but please sign up online it just makes life easier and you save money. I can then also order the right amount of Pizza.

Great day of Rallycross yesterday in perfect winter conditions.

A word of advice to competitors - yesterday when we rescued some of you from the snowbanks, we had you back on the course and going very quickly - often within 45 seconds, but what slowed the operation in many cases was the lack of good tow hooks. So if you want to be competitive, be sure your car has a good strong hook both front and rear.

Thank you Ross and anyone else who was part of pulling people out of the snowbanks. I sadly had to use your service, but you were quite quick at it, so thanks!

I'm sure you got in enough practice of pulling people out on the weekend to last a year :D

Today when I went to Bancroft, I found much more snow on the Rallycross course than I had expected; in fact in one corner where it had drifted, I got my 4Runner stuck and had to shovel myself out. So anyone who had concerns of not enough snow, have no fear. Plus there is more snow forecast for tonight & tomorrow.

Reminder -  you should have tow hooks on both front and rear of your vehicle; otherwise it slows us down in getting you going again if/when you find yourself in a snowbank.

We are considering running the course in reverse just for a change.

Photos to follow.

Hello James and all,

My bro and I had a great time both in and out of the snowbanks. I cannot thank you enough for putting together such a fine event. This is new to us so we leaned quite a bit about the car and our driving. Hopefully the car and our driving will be better prepared for the next event... looking forward to it!

Note - I have cut and pasted this comment to the 2012 RX site, where it belongs.

Thanks for the good comments.

Things we can fairly easily change at Golton:

(1) more variety of course layout and direction - will mean slightly more down time between runs. Will also mean spending a bit more money making course changes and a minor change in the Finish Timing eqpt needed (just a longer wire - maybe $75).

(2) wider plowing in winter - BTW the deal is that the Town of Bancroft provides the equipment and fuel and we pay the operator. So that would mean a bit more time required from the operator and thus a bit more expense. Also slightly more down time between runs.

(3) more change in the running order - a no brainer, no downsider as I see it.

(4) It might be possible to return to the old pit for some of the RX days. I will check that out. The reason we gave it up was because it was so soft and required a lot of course fixup between runs. It is on Town of Bancroft property, so getting permission and the other perks should not be an issue.

(5) James is already considering a full weekend special event.

I don't want anyone to get the idea that we are not looking for other venues. We continue to do that. We have one that is halfway ready for us and want us, but have not finished building the course - kind of got stalled in the project. I will talk to them again.

You cannot underestimate the very important positives about the Bancroft venue(s). The support we get from the Town of Bancroft and the Golton property owners is HUGE and would cost us a lot of dollars if we went elsewhere. We have negotiated with other commercial property owners, but their fees for use of the property were way too high and would have put RX fees beyond grassroots level activity. We are trying to keep RX entry fees as low as possible. I assure you that this is NOT a major money-maker for MLRC and all individuals involved are giving their time purely on a volunteer basis.  You must also understand that almost all of the Bancroft benefits are riding on the coattails of the Tall Pines Rally. Because it provides such huge economic benefit to the area, we get the support for the RX. Also you have to understand that about half the money we currently spend on the RX track comes from Tall Pines budget indirectly via RSO road damage repairs.  I assure you the Tall Pines is not going to move anywhere else closer to Toronto in the near future.

Thanks to 8 hard-working volunteers, we accomplished a lot in the cleanup of the Golton property on Sunday. In addition to cleaning up garbage and removing the snowfence, we carted off approximately 175 tires to the dump. There are no more tires as course markers, but it makes the property look a lot more attractive. The group included James D, Stephanie M, Nick N, Massimo M, Karl H, Bert P, Mike M and Ross W. Photo of the tire pile at the dump to follow.

Hey Ryan,

I'll be up on Sunday to give you a little competition in the Class 4 group ;)

Dave, I still have a lovely set of hotbits that would work for your WRX, and if you were ever to blow them, it would be as simple as just having it rebuilt ;)

Sadly I won't be able to make it on Saturday, but when I did the workers day in the past, it was a blast to go down all the back roads and see where they race for the Tall Pines, so anyone thinking about it should definitely give it a try!

Some simple questions:

Is there a membership?

If I bring a cheque to onsite registration, after registering online, will I be charged $50 or $70?

Is there a large likelihood of damage? I do autocross, (never even hit a pylon) so this is an interesting option, for winter fun, just so long as I don't destroy my car.

Is the naturally-aspirated class competitive, with stock Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS wagons? I've seen several Subaru 2.5 RSs, but none from 2005, I don't have a clue about which mods, and whether it's a wagon or not. Help?

Lastly, do you recommend "armor-plating" the underside of the car? Will there be large stones big enough to destroy parts of the under-body? Do you recommend I wear my racing suit with my helmet?

1. Becoming a MLRC member reduces the cost but not required.

2. I don't know.

3. Less chance of damge in the winter, however you can hurt your car if you are not careful. I tore the exhaust of mine one time, but it was easily repaired.

4. Any AWD Subaru can be competitive in Class 3 (NA - AWD), however rally-X is more about the driver and less about the car. I had a 97 Outback and I did okay, but I was routinely beat by a guy in an Outback Sport with a 2.2 (he could beat me by 10s on a 2 min run!). Class 1 guys beat me without AWD. Technique is critical. Impreza's are probably more competitive due to less weight.

5. I recommend a skid plate to protect your oil pan and transmission, but the track is mostly sandy. You will have to be much more careful without a skid plate. The rest of the car is normally fine.

6. You don't need a racing suit.

1: Thanks, I'll do registration for 2013 if I enjoy the December November event. :) I guess I'm going to the Tall Pines, then.

2:  That's okay.

3: The sand/flying rocks sounds pretty assuring. If you say it's a bit sandier than gravel/unpaved rock, that's reassuring.

4: I've never been experienced in rallying before, I'm not looking for a win, I just don't want to bring a knife to a cold war.  ;D

5: So, I should raid the scrap metal bin, some more, at work?? Also, how can one attach the skid plate? Bindings (i.e. bolts/screws) or welding? Or...?

6: I like showing off my karting swag.  ;)

New question: To speak with the club, about membership, will the club's leaders be at the Rally this coming weekend? I work afternoon shift, Monday-Thursday, 10 hours each day, and can't come to the monthly meetings on Tuesdays.

I grabbed a decent size aluminum skidplate off a fellow that ran rally-X before. I have adapted it to two different Subaru's now. It is just a flat 1/4 plate aluminum.

On my 02 WRX (which would be probably the same as your RS), it is bolted to the bottom of the rad support and to the thing that is mounted on the cross member (I think it is supposed to dampen vibration) right below the power steering lines. It is even has threaded holes in it! On the front I used half of a scrap aluminum door sill from work so that it has a rising lip so that it doesn't get stuck on anything.

It is bolted on so that it can be pulled off to change oil etc.

BTW - there are some rocks and different surfaces on the course - so it is not all sand.

Alright, I'll be at Tall Pines, and the January event. :)

Andrew,  if you just want to join the Club you can fill out the form on the website and your good...

If you want to meet with a member of the executive to ask questions to before joining we will all be around at Pines... 3 of us are competing (James, John and Bruce) and Phil and myself are working.

I am doing VIP and I will be around Friday night handling registration and early Saturday morning. Come find me if you want.

Otherwise see you in January.

Derek.

Well, plans fell through. I'll be here eventually, but, not with the Subaru, and not for a little while. The Subaru will be competing, regionally, in autocross championships, though, so I'll still be around (some) of you guys, if you're into that, too.
