Title: Hello from a clubman rally driver in the UK
Post by gfrosty on 01/12/3 at 20:18:04

Hi all,

Stumbled across this site looking at the rally scene in Canada. I Have been over to Canada several times and I think I have found THE place to be!

So how lively is the rallying scene over here, how easy is it to get involved, ie driving/codriving etc?

I have dowloaded the CARS documents about the rally licence etc, i understand that you have to go to a BARS school to obtain a licence?  Would CARS accept an MSA (UK rally) Licence that I currently hold as a show of proficiency?

Anyways, hope to here from you all.

;D

Not too sure about the rules and such over here, as I'm still working on getting into the whole thing myself (read 18 year old kid with no money).    As for the scene in Canada, nowhere near as big in the UK, but since I moved here from England I've seen huge growth in just a few years.

I'm very jealous of your rally car   :o , I've always had a soft spot for Escorts.

Now there's a real clubman car....good old esquirt.

Now, I know my rulebook is only 2002, but i don't see any mention of rallyschool, except in the case of applying for a national license before 2 regional rallies.  But given the level of experience, I wouldn't doubt you could be issued a national straight away at the director's discrescion, once you get first aid and a local club membership.

I had  a quick read through the 2002 regs and there's some really good bits inthere that the MSA should take notice in the uk, namely the first aid certificate.

I noticed in one of the regs for an event that the DBA level was at 86?  This is a little low isn't it...  most of the cars over here (UK) have a hard problem keeping below 100dba!!

I know one guy in his Metro 6r4 that has to keep repacking his silencer as it brakes down so quickly.

My esky is certainly keeping me busy at the mo, did some testing inthe welsh forests just before xmas and managed to slide a little wide into a tree and pushed inthe o/side rear quarter...   going into the body shop in 2 weeks just before our first event for 2003.

Are there many european cars rallying? I see the usual Scooby & Evo's etc  .. oh and a few Escort cossies (Nice!)  any mk2 escorts about?

I'll bring mine over when I emmigrate! ehehe and my scooby now that I see that the WRX STi's are available in canada...

Yes, it is still turbo....if i remember correctly somewheres around 300hp/lb/ft!  not bad!  Now all we need is the evo!

So does the canadian STI use the legacy 2.5 block then bolt on all the normal impreza stuff?

If so, How come they don't do that for the  Japan / Europe markets I wonder!

So the Evo's isn't imported offically into Canada then? no dealers etc?

I had that problem when I first got my STi5 and wanted to change bits on it.. not many companies doing much for the JAP impreza(STI) back then (1999) but after 6-12 months later, lots!

I have about 340bhp running a full GEMS ECU with Anti-lag, water injection, and all runs very well! ::)

Well, a lot of the WRX's around here have the 'look' of a fast done up car, but aren't much more than stock....so, no it wouldnt, but at the light.... ;D
you run the anti lag much, or is it there by default?

Title: Re: Hello from a clubman rally driver in the UK

I run the anti lag via a switch next to the usual IC spray button.  I don't generally have it on much, too much popping and banging and flames out of the back.... attracts the wrong people!!

I want to try and keep my manifold and turbo for as long as I can, as the temps jump about 300degs whilst running with it over a long distance.

It's still alot of fun though, on boost all the time, no turbo lag..  no fuel left! ehehe

So what is the octane rating you guys have? Do you have 100ron unleaded as stock fuel from the petrol garages?

I bet that beast costs you more in fuel than anything else!  what, with gas at like 3$ a litre or something?  The highest octane at the pump I know of is 94, to get 100 you must specially order it...

yeah the costs of petrol in the uk is a nightmare and is always going up..

I currently pay 0.79pence per litre using Shell's Optimax 98.6 ron fuel.

I usually get around 210miles per tank!!

Graeme,
If 98.6 is the correct number that means here in Canada Shell's Optimax is not even close to what you have in UK. Optimax in Canada is 91 PON (around  95 RON).
However, the price is twice cheaper from what you mentioned.
The only fuel here that comes close to your numbers is Sunoco's 98 RON fuel. Strangely enough I barely feel difference between Shell and Sunoco.
In regards of the sport in Canada, we are far behind Europe in any aspect except one. The roads  ;) I just hope we get an event from WRC, so you people in Europe realize what you are missing.
Cheers

Krass
